Basketball Cake

Basketball Hoop Cake

Here is my latest cake creation.  My husband works for ESPN and every year, at the beginning of the NCAA tournament, they throw a small party (they are ESPN after all).  I sent in basketball cupcakes the first year, then a basketball court cake the second, and here is year three!  (I have ideas for next year’s cake already…).  Anyways, the backboard of the cake is a half sheet cake, and the ball is a dome of cake sculpted from two 10″ round cakes.  (This means I started with a cylinder of cake and then slowly shaved off pieces until I had a rough dome shape – a good coating of buttercream and voila! – a basketball)  I pipped the red border with buttercream, made the hoop from fondant, and pipped the net with royal icing.

  5. This is just amazing! Anyone whohas attempted a designed cake knows the skill it takes to even attempt to ice a cake let alone build your own structure. You done a wonderful job here! Hats off to you!

  8. What a great cake! My son’s team just won the championship game and I was looking around for ideas for a celebration cake. This tops them all. Great job.

  9. Wish I could attach my picture, but LOVED this cake. Simple, but impressive. I want to add that I used a 9×13 for the back board. It was a little disproportional with the ball, but still worked. Also used Red Twizzlers for the rim and lines on backboard… saved me from having to mix another cake color.

  10. that was an awesome comment number 11

  11. Number 10 and 11…..kiss her ass. Id like to see you get up off the computer chair and make a cake like this….but first you should probably finish junior high because you sure dont know how to articulate anything worthwhile

  12. I love it…. Love love it love it. I am going to attempt to try this for my grandsons first birthday…wish me luch.

  13. Awsome cake! You did a great job. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  14. I was looking for a cake for my son’s birthday and this one is perfect! You did a wonderful job on it. I was wondering why you used buttercream icing and royal icing? I’m going to be making it in the next couple of days and just wanted to see there was a reason for the different icings. If you could let me know that would be great. Thanks.

  15. I used buttercream for icing the entire cake and basketball. I chose this because of its ease to work with and it just has the best taste (in my opinion.) I chose to make the basketball netting out of royal because royal icing is stronger and dries hard, therefore giving it extra stability. Because of its consistency, royal icing allows you to pipe strands that can “hang” in mid-air as long as they are, of course, attached or anchored somewhere on the cake. In retrospect, I am not sure I needed the royal in this application, since most of my net ended up laying directly on the basketball, but this was the first time I had attempted a net of any kind and so I wanted to be safe rather than sorry. I think you could use buttercream and be just fine. Hope this help and good luck with your cake!

  16. Thanks so much for the info. It was exactly what I needed to know.

  17. Just curious as to how you get your buttercream so shiny and smooth…Great cake!

  18. Hi Kristi,
The buttercream is so shiny because it is a real Italian Buttercream. The sheen comes from the meringue that is the base for an Italian Buttercream. The smoothness is also a product of the type of buttercream. I find it is easier to work with this buttercream, as the stiffness allows you to create perfectly smooth surfaces.

  19. Awesome cake! I’ve always tried to make whatever cake my kids want for their birthday – some have turned out better than others (don’t ask me about the light saber one, eek!)
This design was by far the best of all the pictures I saw when I looked up basketball cakes. It’s just what I was looking for..I knew I could do an easy round cake that looked like a basketball or a sheet cake with a court on top but this is the unique design I was looking for. Thank you! Looking forward to making it tongiht.

  20. I love this cake. I plan to make for my daughter’s birthday in a few weeks. My only question is, how did you attach the two cakes? The basketball looks like it doesn’t have much support. How did you do it??

  21. Hello. I too have made this for my grandson’s birthday. All we did was make a half circle in the sheet cake and lay it in then, we just use a cake cardboad to lay the cakes on. It really wasn’t hard at all and everyone loved it.

  22. Your cake looks great!
I was going to try and make this for my sister-in-law’s 50th bday as she is a ex-college basketball player and phys ed instructor. I was curious about the italian buttercream icing? Do you have a recipe you recommend for this? Thanks.

  23. Could you give the recipe for your buttercream? My sons birthday is Thursday and he loves this design. 🙂
